CSI Journal Hand In...

Greetings,

The CSI Journals are due on my desk no later than January 22nd at 3:00 PM. Final Exam Results will be posted here January 23rd after 1 PM. THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, so enjoy your day off and we will start ballistics Monday. Ballistics will cover most projectiles, blood splatter, and glass. I'll put some resource information up here as soon as I am done grading. Check at the bottom for links....

Course Description

Forensic science is a multidisciplinary applied science (‘MAS’) encompassing several sub-fields of biology, chemistry, physics, and crime science investigation (CSI). These sub-fields include genetics, toxicology, entomology, ballistics, pathology, computer forensics, fire debris and trace evidence. In this course, study will focus on forensic science concepts: abilities to perform inquiry; basic criminal law; crime scene investigation; DNA analysis and blood typing; examining evidence; fingerprinting; science and humanity; and the nature of toxins. The primary emphasis will be to develop understanding of these concepts through hands on, field inquiry.

The curriculum for Forensic Science is derived from Illinois Learning Goals 11, 12, and 13. The course includes application scientific methodology (goal 11), science content (goal 12), and use of science technologies (goal 13). The main topic of forensic science is to apply scientific methods to substantiate legal investigations. Thus, the benchmarks described in state standards 11A and 13B should be the constant guides for the course. The course information (goal 12) will be taught through ‘hands on’ instruction such as examining mock crime scenes or analyzing evidence in laboratory activities.

Forensic Science is a college preparatory elective course. The course is designed for students interested in pursuing a college degree and eventually working for in crime laboratory or law enforcement. As stated, forensic science is a multidisciplinary applied science. Thus, it reinforces central concepts established in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade core curriculum and serves as a fourth year science course. Four years of science in high school allows a student to enter employment or postsecondary education better prepared.
